History Caught on Film

Mirvac, Curio Projects and Buchan are thrilled to be able present the history of the NSW Railways through the magic of moving pictures, by showcasing three film collections of exceptional national significance in the Eveleigh Exhibition.

Projected high onto the walls of the Bay 1 workshop, is remarkable historic footage featuring the Great Strike of 1917, trains in motion across the NSW rail network, and footage of the workshops in operation in the 1940s.

In 2017 the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) released 'The Great Strike', a rare and censored film documenting one of Australia's largest industrial conflicts.

The Great Strike was first released on October 1917 in the final days of the strike and screened only once in its original format before it was embargoed and censored.

The City of Sydney and National Film and Sound Archive staff undertook extensive research to bring the film back to life, and the restored and reconstructed footage will feature every day in the Eveleigh Exhibition, providing visitors with a unique insight into this crucial moment in the history on the Australian union movement.

Also playing in the Exhibition is footage from the NFSA's Roger McKenzie collection. Roger McKenzie worked as a film editor and was a film collector with a passion for trains. He and friend Bernie Kent were permitted access by NSW Railways in the 1960s and 70s to restricted areas where they could capture extraordinary footage of trains passing, often staying overnight in prime locations.

Rounding out the program is footage from a 1943 black and white Cinesound newsreel 'Monarch of the Rails' which captures the men of Eveleigh hard work as the camera pans through the workshop.
