Community is Key

We’ve collaborated with Alexandria Park Community School, Jiwah and Kylie Kwong to replant South Eveleigh’s Permaculture Garden for a good cause.

In late May, we invited students from APCS to plant some Asian vegetables and herbs in our Permaculture Garden with the guidance of Clarence Slockee from Jiwah. The students were accompanied by the school’s Aboriginal education officer, proud Gumbianggirr man Uncle Hilton Donovan & science teacher Hannah Ward. We started the morning with an Acknowledgement of Country and a discussion on the importance of caring for Country, followed by hands-on planting activities. We were delighted to see the students’ enthusiasm and resilience despite the gloomy weather.

Fast forward seven weeks later, the garden has flourished. The harvest is combined with native warrigals & bush mint planted by Jiwah over a year ago to create a special dish at Lucky Kwong - ‘Stir-fry of South Eveleigh & Alexandria Park Community School’s Vegetables with Five-Spice Firm Tofu & Asian Herbs’. A portion of the sales will be donated to a not-for-profit local organisation picked by the students. They chose The Settlement, a First Nations community hub. The Settlement provides holistic support, resources and opportunities to kids, young adults and the Redfern/Waterloo community. Find out how you can also contribute here.

South Eveleigh strives to nurture our ongoing collaborations and bond with our community. We hope that this initiative inspires the students to keep up this collaborative spirit and find a sense of fulfilment as their hard work comes to fruition and that they’re capable of making a meaningful impact.

The fresh special dish is available at Lucky Kwong each Wednesday. Order online or book a table here.
