Connections To Our Elders
We've commissioned Aboriginal award-winning artist and activist, Aunty Kathryn Dodd Farrawell, a proud Kaanju-Birri woman to create a bespoke artwork for NAIDOC Week 2023.
The artwork titled ‘Connections To Our Elders’, created by Aunty Kathryn Dodd Farrawell and collaborators from The Glebe TreeHouse, will be on display at 107 Projects South Eveleigh and as flag artwork throughout the South Eveleigh. The below poem written by Aunty Kathryn Dodd Farrawell and Georgia Frew beautifully encapsulates the essence of the artwork:
The Wedge Tail Eagle soars high on the Wind for Freedom
In the Sun
Above the Moon
That shines on the Spirit of the Elder dancing in the Smoke
And on the Firelight in the Canoe of the Gadigal Women Fishing
Stars reflect the light on the Blue Sacred Waters
As Women gather to Hear the Voices of Our Elders
Always Was
Always Will Be

Connection to Our Elders by Aunty Kathryn Dodd Farrawell, Kaanju - Birri-Wirri, Gangari Artist and Co-Artist Georgia Frew, Educator, Painter, Drawer
The face profiles that make up the canoes are from parents who attend our Ngara Nanga Mai Aboriginal Playgroup. This playgroup is coordinated by First Nations staff, Aunty Tania Lever & Sam Burns from SDN Children's Services and is hosted on Thursday mornings at the Glebe TreeHouse.
The Glebe TreeHouse is a Schools as Community Centre (SaCC) project. They are based in Glebe Public School and run a variety of community engagement projects in partnership with human service organisations that support parents and carers with young children, aged 0 - 5 years old. Programs include, supported playgroups, parenting programs, early intervention health and well-being projects, community events and adult literacy support.
South Eveleigh acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land on which South Eveleigh stands today, the Gadigal of the Eora nation. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.
